WHAT ON EARTH ARE THESE REELS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?

In 2020, wanting to inject some positivity and laughter into an events industry decimated by Coronavirus, I began collecting inspirational and amusing quotes about life and putting them together in short videos with catchy musical backing.

They gathered a loyal following and were published every Friday in the events industry online magazine micenet.com.

Gradually, these two-minute videos expanded from just collections of quotes to collections of amazing photographs, all related by a quirky theme. One week it would be a collection of embarrassing spelling errors. The next it would be really unfortunate business names. I made compilations of funny signs, really clever marketing messages and people doing very funny and creative things at famous tourist attractions.

The essential ingredients in any collection were: quirkiness and humour. They had to be attention-grabbing. And they had to lift the spirits of anybody who watched them.

Later in the year when I started MCing Online Conferences, I realized that these reels could have a very important role to play in connecting delegates with their screens (and, therefore, the event).

I noticed that, in most cases, delegates would log into the virtual conference platform, then spend spend the minutes leading up to the start of proceedings watching a looping reel of slides, highlighting sponsors and tips on how to use the online platform.

After watching one or two rotations, there were two effects:

1) they stopped paying attention to their screen (they're at their computer, away from the gaze of fellow delegates, surrounded by LOTS of distractions, and

2) the repetition of what amounted to not-very-exciting slides, gave them the impression the event was going to be a little on the tedious side.

So I thought by preceding proceedings with some upbeat music, catchy slides and bit of humour I could better grab delegates’ attention and kick the event off with a very vibrant atmosphere. They also offered a great sponsorship opportunity.

I offered them to all the PCOs I worked with and, when they viewed my example reel, they immediately saw how they could add to the online conference experience.

The feedback has been tremendous. I’m sure they will add a delightful start to the day for any event you are organizing!
